For many singing functions sound modification by the vocal tract resonances play an important role. Additional, it is often assumed that the vocal tract might interact with the voice source. Since vocal tract resonances are strongly dependent on vocal tract shapes it might be of interest to analyse modifications of vocal tract shapes for different singing conditions, such as register transitions or singing at high fundamental frequencies. In this respect the use of dynamic real-time MRI has gathered increasing attention during the last years.
The presentation will show different MRI based studies on vocal tract configurations of professional opera tenors, counter tenors and sopranos with respect to different register conditions and other singing tasks. Also, different genres, such as Musical Theater singing and yodelling will be shown. It is exhibited, that vocal tract modifications differ between register functions, vowel conditions and categories.
